WEEDS Society - Quiz Contest


The University of the Philippines Weed Science Society (UPWSS) is a socio- civic organization on their first year, recently celebrated their anniversary last 11th of November 2015. The highlight of this anniversary was the recently concluded quiz contest entitled “Madadamong Tanungan: Weed? Di nga?”, a quiz contest solely about Weed Science. The activity was held on the 12th of November at the Crop Protection Cluster Lecture Hall, Crop Protection Cluster, College of Agriculture, University of The Philippines, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines from 7PM to 10PM. The said event catered to the fresh young minds of the students currently enrolled in Crop Protection courses. The organization’s aim was to impart a broader and more profound knowledge of weed science to the students who participated.

pic3The quiz contest started out with the registration of the participants, booth was placed at the entrance of the CPCLH. The registration of the teams started at 7PM which continued until 7:30PM. Each team consisted of 3 students. However; the organization also accepted teams which only had 2 students or even a single student per team. The registration fee collected for the “early bird” teams or those who registered before the day of the quiz contest was Php 75, while Php 90 for those who registered on the day of the contest. After registration, the teams were escorted to their seats by an usher or usherette and were given free snacks. At 8PM, the quiz contest started with the introduction by the masters of ceremony Mr. Benjamin Jorge Cadag and Ms. Johanne Bonza, then a doxology lead by Ms. Marjorie Pamplona followed. The president, Dara Maria Fabro, gave the opening remarks and lead the students to make a vow of “Katapan”.

The judges were introduced, namely, Dr. Aurora Baltazar, an adjunct professor at the Crop Protection Cluster, Ms. Romalene Limpiada and Ms. Jhoanna Opeña, both Assistant Scientists at the International Rice Research Institute.

pic6The quiz contest was divided into three rounds: easy, average, and difficult. The answers of the teams to the questions were written on the answer sheet provided by the organization. The questions were read twice and the contestants were given 10 seconds to answer after which the papers were given to the respective proctors. In the easy round, 2 points is gained for every correct answer while 0 point for a no answer and a wrong answer. In the average round, the correct answer was given 3 points while 0 point for a no answer and wrong answer. In the difficult round, 5 points was given for a correct answer and 0 point for a no answer and wrong answer. A cumulative scoring system was followed. The team with the highest number of points at the end of the three rounds was declared the winner. Raffle prizes were drawn after each segment of the quiz contest.


The prizes were given by, Sinochem, a sponsor for the contest. Dinner was served at the end of the average round. The organization took time during dinner to give away several memorabilia in the form of the weed science starter kit, bookmark, and a brochure about weed science to the contestants. The organization invited two musical performers to entertain the students. Ms. Calay shared two of her own compositions entitled Siglo ng Pagbabago and Paraiso. Another performer named, Mr. Adriel rendered three songs. The difficult round started after the performances. The 3rd placer with their team name Sta. Cruz, Paje, and Aram took home the prize money of Php 1000. The 2nd placer with the team name Dry the Cow took home Php 2000. The 1st placer of the quiz contest with the team name Di-maano took home Php 3000. All the winning teams received certificates of achievement. The night ended with the organization thanking everyone for attending and for making the event a very successful one.
